Would it help to swap the 4 Leaf in the '70 to something like the 10 Leaf setup from old Jeeps? Will that just make the ride crazy stiff? Or is there something blatantly easier I'm missing?

If you're going to do a suspension swap, how about bringing it into this century?

I think what you're missing is that stiffer does not automatically equal better handling. Otherwise race cars wouldn't have springs at all. The suspension has to be able to keep the tires in contact with the road even over bumps and those Jeep springs would have the rear bouncing all over the place.

There's more to tuning than that.

What I would imagine would happen would be uncontrollable oversteer. Think of it like this: you turn, your car wants to roll, and transfers more weight to your outside tires. Your front wheel is sprung by the stock squishy spring, and your rear is stiff as hell. That means that when your car rolls, its transferring way more weight to that rear tire than the front one, since the rear is much harder to compress.

So now you're thinking, "well I'll just add some spring from the front of some new truck to the front." Now after doing that, each corner of your car is super stiff, and requires a ton of force to displace. So think of what happens when you hit a bump - instead of that wheel moving and the energy being soaked up in your shock absorber, more of the energy is thrown into the chassis, causing all the other wheels to be slightly upset. Racecars can have super stiff suspension because racetracks are relatively flat, but on the street you'd probably be better off with something a bit softer.

That doesn't mean your car is perfect as it is - it probably has springs that are softer to compromise handling in favor of comfort (that is, when your wheel hits that bump, it doesn't return back to the pavement on the other side fast enough because you have such a soft spring). But there is a point where stiffer is not better, and that point probably (my guess) occurs before jeep springs.

what if he went with stiffer springs and a meatier tire??? It would be slightly less sharp handling on initial turn in, but less body roll.

Stiffer springs all around and meatier tires would kinda cancel out, but it's important to note that tire sidewall deformation is not nearly as predictable as spring deformation. There are so many weird rotational effects, the fact that rubber is more resistive to high speed deformation than slowly being deformed makes it kinda weird.

well they react differently. The pressure in the tires would be good to absorb smaller imperfections in the road and not yield as much to the gross loading in a corner. I'm just spitballing here, no real concrete thinking has gone into this. I don't really know what he is going for though.

I see where you're going, but remember that each of those absorptions (or expansions) will change the size/shape of the contact patch of the tire. The suspension above the tire works to keep that contact patch reliably the same so your can predict how much grip you'll have at a given time.

I'm also spitballing here, but I'm going a bit from my experiences in my Z rolling on 14s. Haha

That makes sense. If I was him I'd probably just go with new shocks and a stout sway bar and leaf the springs alone....... hahahahaha.

That's roughly what I was thinking, minus the bad pun. Haha
